Meals on Wheels by ACC is dedicated to providing seniors with the necessary nutritional support to protect them against food insecurity, and to help them continue to live independent and fulfilling lives.
For many seniors, Meals on Wheels by ACC is the first service that they seek for assistance to help them stay in their own homes and live independently. However, without the meals supplied by our program, many seniors would be prematurely placed in assisted living or nursing homes due to their inability to shop for food or prepare their own meals.
Many seniors face the threat of hunger due to limitations in their daily living activities, such as difficulties with walking, breathing, meal preparation, eating, and memory. In addition, many seniors live alone and do not have family or neighbors to help shop for or prepare meals.
Get the Facts
In 2010, there were approximately 250,000 seniors in Sacramento County. Of these quarter of a million seniors,
- 24% have trouble getting up and down stairs and 16% have trouble getting up from a chair;
- 46% of those who have difficulty eating receive help with this task but continue to have trouble;
- 67% of those who have difficulty preparing meals continue to have difficulty despite in-home meal preparation assistance;
- and 54% of seniors report that food is the first expense that they cut back on when money is tight.
Projections indicate that there will be over 344,000 seniors by the year 2020 and nearly half a million seniors by the year 2030. As Sacramento County’s population continues to age, and with life expectancies and retirement rates increasing, the number of seniors at risk for hunger will only rise.
